The Brenneke slug (modified to work in my 2.5 inch Win 9410) has been the best performer to date. Since then the 410 slug has become quite the hobby for me and I have been trying to find a better (both in accuracy and terminal performance) ever since. The thrill of taking a deer that close with my 9410 was awesome. The first day I hunted with my Winchester 9410 I took a nice 8-pt deer. I convinced myself that if I kept my shots close the 410 slug could take a deer.

So I started doing some research and testing. I was stunned that a smooth bore shotgun could shoot slugs that well, and on top of that I didn't have a bloody-nose like I so often got from 3-inch Remington sluggers out of my 12 gauge BPS. One of my first groups I shot with the 9410 was a five shot, 2-inch group, at 50 yards with 410 Remington Sluggers. I was at the range shortly after getting the 9410, there primarily to sight in my muzzle loader, but I had bought some slugs for the 9410 and figured I would give them a try just so I could say I gave it a try. I was mainly going to use my 9410 for squirrel and rabbit.

When I bought it I really didn't think I was going to hunt deer with it, at least not to seriously, but I thought I would at least play with slugs and see what they would do. It looks and feels just like a Win 94 in 30-30 and even has a side loading gate (a big draw for me) but chambered in the 2.5 inch 410 shotshell. So when Winchester introduced the Win 9410 I got real interested and ended up buying one. I wanted to hunt deer with a lever action, but I live in a shotgun only state so 99.9% of all lever guns were out (the Winchester 18 being my only options that I knew of at the time). I am hoping he gets that project up and going so I can give them a try.Īs for the 410 slug I came to it in a very long route. Kind of a "You pays your money and makes your choice" type of thing.Click to expand. The fins in the very first picture of the thread you linked to above were machined by myself for turbo1889. 311' SP 2310 bullet and IMR 4895, 2.83', when I work up to a sticky bolt it takes 53 gr. It also can be satisfying "rolling your own". Greg, with 7.62x54R 91/30 Mosin Nagants, Sierra 180 gr. Loading information comes with them and they DO work well. Since I don't need many shotshells in my revolvers (I use just a few every year) I go the capsule route. If you want to work a bit more, then the appropriate extended cases will work well. 45 ACP/.45 Colt cases with excellent results. So, for minimum work and a little money just use shot capsules in. These Rainier bullets I am told by a Rainier tech person should follow the loads for similar weight. I am using Rainier Plated bullets in the 240 gr flat point and want to use Unique powder (I already purchased a bottle). They worked OK (at that time there were NO shot capsules in ANY caliber). I am working up 44 rem mag loads for my Ruger Super Redhawk with a 9 1/2' barrel. Years ago, I used 30'06 rifle cases cut off to the proper length for. You just have to balance the cost of the cases against capsule cost. 444) that extends to the cylinder mouth, you can do the same, essentially, as the shot capsule. Using a case length (as illustrated above with a. Since the shot capsules extend way beyond the cartridge case, you get far more shot in them than just using the standard. I would not recommend these for a 44 Mag chamber. The case will fire form to the 44 Special chamber and throat so after the first shot, they fit much better and don't require sizing at all. Here's a 44 Special next to one of my "bottle neck" 44 Mag cases. That means it will shoot about 6" low when aiming directly at the target. Recoil is very light so the muzzle doesn't rise much. These loads would take out a rat or snake at at least 15 feet. I coated the top of the wad with Testor's model airplane glue and let it harden. I loaded # 7 1/2 shot to just short of the case mouth then place another cardboard wad on top of the shot. To make the wads, I sharpened the case mouth on a 44 Mag case and used it like a cookie cutter on the back cardboard of a tablet. I used 6 gr of Unique with a cardboard over powder wad. This makes the case diameter just right for 44 Special chambers and throats yet extends the length enough where you have room to load a nice shot charge. I started by sizing 44 Mag brass with the normal sizing die then necked down the top with a 40 S&W sizing die.
